![fomo logo - social crypto trading app](/logos/fomo.webp) "Non-custodial" gets used as a blanket reassurance across crypto apps, and it's true of fomo — but it's worth understanding exactly what it does and doesn't protect you from, especially the moment you export your key. This page also covers real, documented fake fomo sites, because that's a more immediate risk than anything about fomo's own infrastructure.

fomo's wallet is genuinely non-custodial while your funds sit inside the app — your key is split across shares that no single party, including fomo, can reconstruct alone. The moment you export that key to move funds elsewhere, it travels to you unencrypted and the security responsibility becomes entirely yours. Separately, at least two fake fomo websites have been documented — always check you're on fomo.family.

## How the wallet actually works

fomo's help center describes the custody model directly:

"Your private key is never stored in one place. It is split into multiple shares and distributed so that no single party, including fomo, holds enough to reconstruct it."

This is done through ![Privy logo - embedded wallet provider used by fomo](/logos/privy.webp) Privy , a third-party wallet infrastructure provider that fomo Labs Inc. uses to generate and manage wallets — Privy itself was acquired by Stripe in 2025, and no security incident involving Privy has been publicly reported.

## What changes when you export your key

fomo's Terms of Service state this plainly, and it's worth reading exactly as written, because it's a real shift in who's responsible for what:

"The keys will be transmitted to you unencrypted by Privy, a third-party service provider... YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND ACCEPT THE RISK OF TRANSACTING UNENCRYPTED DIGITAL WALLET KEYS OVER THE INTERNET"

Both things are true at once

While your key sits split across shares inside the app, it's genuinely protected — fomo itself can't reconstruct it. The moment you export it, that protection ends: the key travels to you unencrypted, and fomo's own terms state it is "not responsible for the security or safety of your digital assets" from that point forward. If you only ever need to trade inside the app, this distinction may never matter to you. If you plan to move funds to another wallet, do it somewhere private and secure. For anything you're not actively trading, a hardware wallet like ![ledger logo](/logos/ledger.webp) Ledger or ![trezor logo](/logos/trezor.webp) Trezor is a safer long-term home than a key stored anywhere on a phone or synced to the cloud.

## fomo's own security track record

We found no publicly reported hack, exploit, or data breach involving fomo itself as of this writing, and no public bug bounty program listed either. That's worth stating plainly as a positive — but it should be read as "no reports found," not "guaranteed safe," particularly for an app with a userbase that skews toward people newer to crypto and less likely to post about problems in the places researchers look.

## Real fake fomo sites — this is the risk that actually matters

This is more relevant to your day-to-day safety than anything about fomo's own infrastructure. At least two documented impersonation attempts exist:

A wallet-drainer phishing site , hosted at a domain closely imitating fomo's real one, was documented by security researchers luring victims with a fake "airdrop or pre-sale event" and connecting their wallet to a drainer that would siphon funds. That specific site is no longer active, but the pattern — a lookalike domain, a fake claim page, a wallet-connect prompt — is one to recognize on sight.

A separate, live impersonation site closely clones fomo's branding — including hotlinking fomo's own real images — and runs a fake token with a fake "listing vote," neither of which fomo actually has. See our [token and airdrop guide](/ecosystem/fomo-token-airdrop) for why that combination is a giveaway: fomo has no token, so any site presenting one as real is not fomo.

Before you connect a wallet anywhere claiming to be fomo

Check the domain is exactly fomo.family . Be suspicious of any site offering to "check eligibility" for a token or airdrop — fomo doesn't have one. And remember: fomo will never DM you asking to move funds or offering an "escrow" arrangement for a trade. Anyone who does is impersonating a trader, not fomo itself.

## What we can't help with

This is our site, not fomo's — we have no relationship with fomo Labs Inc. and can't access your account, recover funds, or resolve support issues. For actual account problems, go through fomo's own official support channels, linked from the app itself. If anyone contacts you claiming to be fomo support and asking for your key, your password, or a payment to "unlock" your account, that is not fomo — it's a scam, and no legitimate support process works that way.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Non-custodial. fomo's help center states your private key is split into multiple shares and distributed so that no single party, including fomo, holds enough to reconstruct it on its own. It's held this way, split, unless and until you choose to export it.

Per fomo's own Terms of Service, the key is transmitted to you unencrypted by Privy, the third-party wallet provider, at the moment of export, and fomo states it is not responsible for the security of your funds from that point. Non-custodial while it sits in the app, your full responsibility once exported.

No security incident at fomo itself has been publicly reported as of this writing. We found no hack, exploit, or data breach on record, and no public bug bounty program either. That's a reasonable track record, though it should be read as 'no reports found,' not a guarantee.

Yes, at least two documented cases: a wallet-drainer phishing site (now dead) that closely imitated fomo's design, and a separate live impersonation site running a fake token and fake governance vote as of this writing. Always verify you're on fomo.family before connecting a wallet or entering payment details.
