# Robinhood Chain Gas Fees: What Actually Changes When the Subsidy Ends on September 29

> Robinhood's 90-day gas subsidy expires around September 29, 2026, and the company has not said what happens next. It only ever covered Robinhood Wallet users, which means most people reading about it were never in it.

Robinhood Chain launched with a 90-day gas subsidy on July 1, 2026. That window closes around September 29, and Robinhood has not said what happens the day after.

Most of what has been written about this is wrong in the same specific way, so the correction is worth putting first: **the subsidy was never chain-wide.** It covered people using Robinhood Wallet. If you were transacting through anything else, you have been paying full price since day one.

> **Key takeaway:** The 90-day subsidy covered swap costs for Robinhood Wallet users and expires around September 29, 2026. As of September 6, Robinhood has not published its own page documenting the program and has not said whether it will extend. Third-party wallet users were never covered. fomo users are also outside it, because fomo's help center says fomo covers gas on Robinhood Chain itself. Gas is paid in ETH, and it has to be ETH already sitting on Robinhood Chain.

## What the subsidy actually was

Robinhood launched the chain on July 1, 2026 and ran a 90-day program described by crypto.news, on September 4, 2026, as "covering all swap costs above $5 for Robinhood Wallet users."

Read that carefully. Three limits are packed into one sentence:

- It applied to **swaps**, not to every transaction type.
- It applied to **Robinhood Wallet**, not to the chain.
- It kicked in **above a dollar threshold**, so the smallest transactions were never the point.

None of that appears on Robinhood's own site. The company's July 1 mainnet announcement, which is a long post covering Stock Tokens, Robinhood Earn, agentic trading, the Canada launch and the Singapore licence, does not mention a gas subsidy at all. There is no first-party page documenting the program, which is a large part of why the secondary coverage is so muddled.

> **Warning:** Several outlets report that Robinhood cut the sponsorship threshold from $5 to $0.50 partway through the program. We found that in a KuCoin newsflash but not in any Robinhood statement, and the crypto.news reporting names only the $5 figure. Treat the $0.50 number as unconfirmed until Robinhood says it in its own words. The expiry date itself is better sourced.

## The cost curve underneath it

The subsidy question matters because the underlying number moved so far, so fast. Two data points from crypto.news, published September 4, 2026:

- On **September 2, 2026**, Robinhood Chain generated **$4.01 million in chain revenue on $4.45 million in fees**.
- **Six days earlier**, daily revenue was **$179,815**.

![Chart of Robinhood Chain daily fees and revenue rising from about $179,815 in late August 2026 to $4.45 million in fees on September 2, 2026](/images/fees/robinhood-chain/robinhood-chain-daily-fees.webp)

*Built from the figures reported by crypto.news, September 4, 2026*

That is roughly a 22x move in under a week. Fees on a network are a function of demand for blockspace, and demand arrived: the chain recorded about $945 million in daily DEX volume on August 25, 2026, and over $47 billion cumulatively since launch.

**So the honest answer to "what does a transaction cost on Robinhood Chain" is that it depends on the day.** Any figure quoted without a date attached is close to meaningless, which is a problem when the entire secondary literature quotes figures without dates.

## Who was covered, and who was not

| You were using | Covered by the subsidy? | What changes on September 29 |
|---|---|---|
| Robinhood Wallet | Yes, on swaps above the threshold | You start paying swap gas, unless Robinhood extends |
| MetaMask, Rabby, other third-party wallets | No | Nothing. You have been paying standard gas since July 1 |
| Phantom | No | Nothing at the gas level. Phantom does run gasless swaps of its own for eligible same-network transactions |
| fomo | No | Nothing you pay. fomo covers gas on this network itself |

The fomo row is the one worth expanding, because it is the reason this page exists on a site about fomo.

## Why fomo users are outside this entirely

fomo's help center states that fomo "covers all gas fees, priority fees, and token rent on Solana, Base, BNB Chain, Monad, and Robinhood Chain so you never pay them separately," with Ethereum as the exception where network fees are passed through. We last read that page on August 20, 2026.

So the chain of logic for a fomo user is short. You never paid Robinhood Chain gas, because fomo paid it. You were not in Robinhood's Wallet subsidy, because you were not using Robinhood Wallet. September 29 changes nothing about what shows up on your trade.

**What it does change is on fomo's side.** fomo committed to covering gas on a network where fees went from negligible to several million dollars a day across all users. That is a real cost being absorbed by the app rather than by you, on a chain fomo added in July 2026.

> **Note:** It would be easy to turn that observation into a prediction that fomo will raise its fees, and we are not going to, because there is no evidence for it. fomo has not announced a change, the gas it covers is a fraction of the 0.50% trading fee it charges, and fee schedules move for many reasons. What we will do is re-read fomo's fee article the week of September 29 and update this page and our [fees guide](/guides/fees/fomo-fees-explained) if anything moves.

## What you pay gas in, and the mistake people make

Robinhood Chain is an Arbitrum Orbit layer 2 on Ethereum, and per Robinhood's developer docs its native gas token is **ETH**. There is no separate gas coin.

The trap is that it has to be ETH **on Robinhood Chain**. Phantom's own help center puts it plainly: "You must bridge or deposit ETH directly to your Robinhood Chain balance first." ETH sitting on Ethereum mainnet, on Base, or on any other layer 2 cannot pay a fee here. This is the single most common reason a transaction will not go through for someone who just switched the network on.

For reference, the connection details straight from Robinhood's docs, read September 6, 2026:

| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Mainnet chain ID | 4663 |
| Testnet chain ID | 46630 |
| Gas token | ETH |
| Public RPC | `https://rpc.mainnet.chain.robinhood.com` |
| Block explorer | `robinhoodchain.blockscout.com` |

Robinhood's own note on that public endpoint: it is "rate-limited and not recommended for production use."

## What to watch on September 29

**Whether Robinhood says anything at all.** As of September 6, 2026 the company "has not announced plans either way" on extending, reducing or restructuring the program, per crypto.news. Silence through the deadline is itself an answer.

**Whether volume holds.** The interesting question is not what a swap costs, it is whether the activity that arrived during a subsidised window stays once the window shuts. A chain doing $945 million in daily DEX volume under a fee subsidy is not the same as a chain doing it without one.

**Whether the fee model changes rather than the subsidy.** Robinhood keeps roughly 90% of net protocol revenue and shares 10% with Arbitrum. There is more than one lever here, and ending a wallet-level subsidy is only the most visible one.

**Whether fomo's own schedule moves.** It has changed three times in twelve days before now, so we re-read it weekly regardless.

We will update this page the week of September 29 with whatever happens, and date the change.
